We started off the day by reading التمساح الأناني, about a crocodile who learns to share. (My older son—a bit inexplicably, for me—loves it.) But for parents who have a copy on hand, you might start a new Eid-book tradition by reading the newly released حذاء العيد from award-winning writer فاطمة شرف الدين and illustrator أسامة مزهر.
Also, don’t forget this new العيدية idea, which I’ve now seen promoted by both Alef and Al-Balsam bookstores here in Cairo: bookstore gift certificates for the Eid!
And lastly, remember all those around the world who can’t read books to their children this Eid, either because they lack the literacy skills or the books. I’m sure there are many places you can donate books: One of them is the Free Gaza Movement’s Right to Read Campaign.
