Children’s Bookshop News: First-ever Opens in Dubai, One-Year Anniversary of Cairo’s

A new children’s bookstore has opened its doors in Dubai.

The shop, called كان ياما كان (Kan Ya Ma Kan, the equivalent of “Once Upon a Time”), is located at الاتحاد مول on شارع الخوانيج.

This photograph of the shop is stunning:

Store managers are lucky we don’t live in Dubai, or my children might move in.

Although the shop only opened its doors in March, store managers already are hosting readings and have ambitious plans for the future. From their tweets:

يقولون اننا امة لا تقرأ…. فلنثبت العكس و لنلتزم بالقراءة والمناقشة اليومية للكتب لاطفالنا ليشبوا على حب القراءة والفهم و التذوق

Yes!

Meanwhile, Al-Balsam Bookstore, the first children-centric bookstore in Cairo, is getting ready to celebrate its first anniversary May 1.

Details will be announced soon.

Thanks to Bodour for the tip about KYK! And apologies for how little I’ve done lately; I forgot how much work infants can be.

I went to Kam Yama Kan 2 days ago and it is an absolutely beautiful store. It feels great to finally have a store devoted only to Arabic books. We will have Maitha Al Khayyat reading her book “Tareeqati Al Khassa” there on the 30th at noon. All who live in Dubai are welcome to attend with their kids:)
